It might seem like you can't venture five metres from your front door without seeing a new 2013 Toyota Corolla, but don't be surprised: the small hatch is now Australia's best-selling car.
Following its march to the top of monthly sales in April, the Corolla has passed Mazda's popular 3 range to become the new leader in year-to-date (YTD) sales for 2013.
According to official VFACTS figures, Toyota sold 3,640 Corollas in May, boosting its YTD tally to 16,774. By comparison, 3,054 Mazda3 cars found new homes, bringing its YTD figure to 16,405.
For Toyota, the new numbers mean a 10.2 percent YTD increase over the same period in 2012, while the Mazda3 has fallen 8.3 percent compared to last year.
The top-selling car in May, however, was not the Corolla, but rather its equally popular HiLux stablemate, with 3,665 sales in May and a YTD figure of 15,790. Nearly 12,000 of those were 4x4 models.
The HiLux performed similarly well in April, with 2,932 sales, but the Corolla pipped the big pickup convincingly with 3,504 sales.
Mazda's midsized CX-5 remains the top-selling model in the hugely popular SUV category, with 1,773 sales in May. Hyundai's smaller ix35 came within a hair of the lead however, managing 1,770 sales.
