News of its impending passing would seem to be greatly exaggerated; Toyota Australia today confirmed that it will be launching an updated LandCruiser 70 Series later in 2016.

And the new model, Toyota spokesperson Stephen Coughlan confirmed, will come with a full suite of airbags and dynamic and passive safety features (as announced in September last year) not found in the current car.

“We are aiming for a 5-Star ANCAP rating for the new model,” Mr Coughlan said.

Toyota Australia’s local engineering and design operation has been heavily involved with the development of the updated model.

"The 70 Series is an important model (for Toyota) in the Australian market,” Mr Coughlan said. “We couldn’t just let it slide away.”

“The launch of the new 70 Series, along with the new Prius, will be our key product launches for 2016,” he said.

Securing a 5-Star ANCAP rating will of course be important if Toyota is to get the 70 Series back into the fleets of the ‘big miners’, BHP Billiton et al, who have stipulated 5-Star ratings for vehicles in their company fleets.

The farming and regional sector will be greatly heartened by this news.
