Toyota Australia has marked its second major milestone for 2013, notching up its two millionth locally built car for the domestic market.

It's been 21 years since the local carmaker cracked the one million mark in Australia, and this year Toyota is also celebrating 50 years of local manufacturing.

Australia was the first country outside Japan to see Toyota production, with the Tiara, Corolla, Corona and Crown all built here at some stage over the years.

Today, the Camry, Camry Hybrid and Aurion sedans are built at the Altona plant in Melbourne with Toyota also building four-cylinder petrol and hybrid engines locally.

Toyota Australia’s Tony Cramb said the milestone demonstrated the carmaker’s commitment to the local market.

"This achievement is the latest demonstration that Toyota is building cars in Australia with the quality, technology, performance, fuel economy and value demanded by local and overseas buyers," Mr Cramb said.

"We have been doing that for half a century, and our employees, suppliers and dealers are committed to continuing to make their vital contributions to Australia."

Aside from local sales, Toyota Australia has also built more than one million cars for export since 1986.

Last month, the Toyota Camry was easily the best-selling medium sized car under $60,000 in Australia, with a whopping 46 percent of the market while the Aurion was the third best-selling large car under $70,000.
