Toyota's Corolla is back on top as the number one car in the country, displacing the ageing Mazda3 in April with its brand-new hatch and outgoing sedan.

Raking in 3,504 sales last month, the Corolla comfortably bested the Mazda3's 2,842 April sales. And, while the 3 remains on top in year-to-date sales (13,351), Toyota's new hatch is on course to steal that crown too.

But both carmakers have plenty to smile about, with the HiLux's 2,932 April sales topping the 4x4 and 4x2 segments, while the CX-5 remains the most popular SUV in the country with 1,510 sales.

The list of April successes is longer for Toyota however, with the Yaris, Camry, 86, Prado, LandCruiser 200, HiAce bus and van models also topping their respective segments.

The Japanese carmaker doubled the combined sales of its nearest competitors in April, with a total of 16,902 sales outdoing Holden's 7,994 and Mazda's 7,833 sales.

Year-to-date, Toyota's sales at end of April were at 64,947 - 1000 more than in the same period last year, and 30,000 ahead of any other brand.

Toyota's sales for April represent a market share of 19.9 percent in April. Holden ranks a distant second with 9.4 percent and Mazda a close third with 9.2 percent.
