To coincide with the international release of the updated Toyota 86, Toyota Australia has issued a reminder of the key upgrades expected when the new model lands on local shores in the fourth quarter of 2016.
Chief engineer of the 86 project, Tetsuya Tada, claims that data gleaned from the 86’s racing applications, including the Nurburgring 24 hour race, have led to improvements made in the production version.
"We overhauled everything - primarily as a result of technological feedback from the 86's participation in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring - and repeatedly tested the vehicle on roads all over the world as we manufactured every single part," Mr Tada said.
"The new 86 has been perfected to such an extent that, from the moment the steering wheel is gripped and the vehicle accelerates away, every driver will be able to recognise its evolution."
Changes made to the 2017 Toyota 86 include revisions to the intake and exhaust manifolds, boosting power and torque in manual variants by 3.4 percent to 152kW and 212Nm.
Handling changes have also been made, with sharper steering responses and reworked shock absorber damping, as well as additional chassis spot welds to increase the stiffness of suspension mounting points.
Exterior changes extend to restyled front and rear bumpers, with a focus on aerodynamic improvements, as well as giving the 86 a wider, more planted stance when viewed head-on.
New vents appear in the front guards, 86 badging moves to behind the front wheels, and both head and taillight internals have been revised to bring the look up to date.
On the inside Toyota has fitted its smallest ever steering wheel, with a 362mm diameter. The central tachometer has also been reworked with the 7000rpm redline placed at the top of the gauge (previously that mark was slightly beyond the 12:00 o’clock mark).
Depending on the specification newly designed 17-inch alloy wheels, a 4.2-inch TFT instrument cluster display, a blade-type rear spoiler, and a glare-reducing Grande Luxe fake suede instrument trim cover will also be made available.
Australia represents the third largest market for the 86 globally, with over 17,200 sales clocked up since the lightweight rear wheel drive coupe went on sale in 2012.
Although Toyota remains tight-lipped regarding exact features and pricing for the Australian market, more detail about the updated range is expected to filter through before the facelifted range goes on sale towards the end of this year.
