Toyota and Subaru will reveal the fruits of their sports-car collaboration at this year's Tokyo Motor Show, according to reports out of the US this week.

That follows confirmation from Toyota last month that it would unveil the production version of its FT-86 concept series in time for the 2012 model year - meaning either later this year, or early next.

Toyota has led the show, so far, revealing four concepts, hinting at launch dates, and releasing a number of telling technical details.

Subaru, on the other hand, has offered a skeletal teaser of the car it will build on the shared platform - and little else.

It is known that both cars will be powered by Subaru's new third-generation 2.0 litre boxer engine, with the added benefit of Toyota's D-4S direct-injection technology.

It is expected that both cars will utilise the same rear-wheel-drive layour described by Toyota, marking a depature from Subaru's all-wheel-drive philosophy.

According to US publication Inside Line, sources inside Toyota and Subaru have confirmed that there are no plans for an all-wheel-drive variant.

And despite recent sightings of a bewinged test-car wearing a full bodykit (above), it is also understood that there will be no turbocharged version.
