Yes, yes, it's all too easy to quip that Toyota is already in the business of creating appliances, but the Japanese auto juggernaut has teamed up with Panasonic to help integrate home electronics with its future models.

Why? So you can tell your oven to start cooking a roast or command your heater to warm up the house remotely, all from the comfort of your car.

Those anxious moments of self-doubt when you wonder if you left the stove on should also become a thing of the past.

And it's not far from becoming reality either. Toyota and Panasonic intend to launch the service in Japan in the second half of this year, and have been working on the system integration project for over a year now.

It works by sending data to a cloud server, which does the actual monitoring of your home gadgets.

It's effectively an extension of the Toyota Smart Center software, which was designed to monitor domestic energy consumption and relay the charging status of a plug-in electric car to a user's computer or phone.

Toyota and Panasonic will showcase the technology at the Smart Community Japan 2014 expo in Tokyo this month, prior to its introduction in the Japanese market later this year. Whether the tech will ever make its way to Australia remains to be seen.
