A new Mazda2-based light car will be produced by Mazda for Toyota, the two carmakers have announced. The new car is to be built alongside the 2 at Mazda's Mexico plant.

The Salamanca city plant is still under construction, but Mazda has agreed to produce 50,000 units of the new model annually, beginning in mid-2015.

For now, the new light car has been confirmed for sale in North America only.

Total capacity for the plant will be 140,000, leaving the capabilty to build 90,000 Mazda2 and Mazda3 models per year.

The new plant is set to manufacture its first Mazda models before mid-2014. Toyota has invested funds to extend its capability to include a Toyota-badged model.

This Mazda/Toyota deal is similar to the arrangement between Toyota and Subaru for the manufacture of the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ cousins, where both are manufactured at Subaru’s Gunma plant in Japan.

Mazda aims to improve production efficiency at the Salamanca plant via the greater volume promised by this alliance, while Toyota will use the new model to strengthen its North American line-up.

It remains unclear how Toyota will position the new model within its range. Toyota currently markets its own (2 competitor) Yaris light car in North America’s three largest markets; Mexico, the US and Canada.

Either way, North American buyers will soon be able to buy a Toyota small car with a distinct Mazda flavour to it.
