Toyota Australia will launch its own one-make racing series for the hugely popular 86 coupe in 2016, mirroring a similar series run by Toyota in the US.
Announced at the weekend’s Festival of 86 event, the new championship will be launched as a ‘pro-am’ event that will see talented amateurs take on top-tier drivers here in Australia.
Details are still to come, although Toyota Australia marketing boss Tony Cramb confirmed on the weekend that the company hopes to welcome all drivers with a competition licence.
"The concept is a pro-am with amateur drivers from across Australia competing against selected professional drivers," Mr Cramb said.
As with similar one-make series run by other brands, the 86 championship will require competitors to adhere to a strict setup for their cars, focusing more on driver talent rather than team budget.
