Toyota's new 86 sports coupe may be one step closer to getting a topless twin, with reports out of the US suggesting a strong opening year may be all that's needed.

According to America's Car & Driver magazine, top brass at Toyota have already confirmed that a convertible version of the US-market Scion FR-S (the 86's name in that market) is edging closer to the green light.

The magazine claims that while Toyota and Scion bosses are ready to push the button, the convertible 86/FR-S is unlikely to arrive before 2014.

The report follows earlier comments from development boss Tetsuya Tada, confirming that the 86 and its Subaru BRZ twin were designed to accommodate a convertible version.

A recent Scion-commissioned concept (pictured) offered a look at the FR-S as a dedicated speedster, replacing the roof and glasshouse with a lowered windscreen and side windows, and a long rear deck.

Australia’s Toyota 86 variant (with fixed roof) is due to hit our shores in June.
