Patent images of Toyota’s upcoming 86 convertible have appeared online, barely a month after the drop-top’s preview as the FT-86 Open Geneva concept.
These images are courtesy of Toyota Europe patent filings, and confirm the apparent production-readiness of the FT-86 Open concept.
In fact, the only differences to the eye are the hardtop 86 GTS-spec wheels, and a slightly larger rear window opening in the folding soft top.
Like the concept, these images show a roofline that is little changed from the hardtop, though the window line has been flattened to suit a top-down profile.
Toyota is yet to specify a production timeline for the new variant, nor the soft top’s compromise to body rigidity or weight over the hardtop.
These, along with price, will be key concerns for enthusiast buyers, and Mazda will also be keeping a close eye with its MX-5 replacement due in the next couple of years.
