Toyota has confirmed it will unveil a convertible version of its popular new 86 sports coupe at next month's Geneva Motor Show.

The topless Toyota's Geneva appearance will also revive the current coupe model's development name, debuting as the FT-86 Open.

Importantly, Toyota has revealed that the Open represents "a sneak preview of a possible future variant" of the lightweight sports car.

A production debut appears likely however, with the carmaker also confirming today that the convertible concept's debut will coincide with the beginning of prototype engineering assessment.

The unveiling of the FT-86 Open comes more than three years on from the original concept's debut in Tokyo, which was followed by the FT-86 G and the FT-86 II concepts

If the Open concept makes its way to production, it will be Toyota's first global convertible since the last-generation MR2 left the market in 2006.

Toyota's 86 Coupe, along with its Subaru BRZ twin, was declared TMR's 2012 Best Buy.
