TOMTOM COMMUTER CONCEPT

Dutch navigation company TomTom has revealed a concept that it says could be the ideal satellite navigation unit for the daily grind.

The concept device was unveiled during a recent display of technological advances by TomTom in Amsterdam.

Called the “Commuter”, the small dash-mounted disc shaped screen is aimed at those who usually travel to and from the same destination each day.

As most of these commuters already know how to get to their destination, TomTom says it has compressed all of its latest traffic monitoring systems into the Commuter to focus solely on relaying the fastest route to the driver.

The unit aims to offer real time traffic updates so the driver is always utilising the fastest available route. It will also continue to update the estimated time of arrival to be as accurate as possible.

“TomTom has unparalleled knowledge of the traffic situation across the entire road network," TomTom’s Corinne Vigreux said.

"Many commuters face a daily driving dilemma, never knowing for sure which of their regular routes will be the fastest. The TomTom Commuter concept will eradicate uncertainty and enable daily drivers to make informed decisions," Ms Vigreux said.

No announcement from TomTom as yet on when such a device will become available.
