Suzuki's Regina city-car concept has bowed at the Tokyo Motor Show this week, offering what Suzuki describes as a preview of its next-generation (Alto replacing?) global small car.

The Regina's look reveals a retro vibe, with a dash of classic Citroen and a smattering of futuristic styling. That is, the future as it was imagined back in the 50s.

Surprisingly, this is one concept that doesn't feature an electric, hybrid or hydrogen powertrain, but rather a conventional petrol engine.

Technical details for the engine haven't been revealed, but Suzuki says we can expect fuel consumption figures as low as 3.0 l/100km, depending on the car's configuration - and its 730kg kerb weight plays a big part here.

By comparison, the Australian-delivered Alto light car returns 4.7 l/100km, with a 50kW three-cylinder 1.0 litre engine.

With the current Alto only a few years into its life cycle, it will likely be sometime before we see the Regina's production offspring on the roads, but at least now we have sometime of what's to come.

Can we expect to see elements of the Regina's styling on future versions of the Swift small car, or the Kizashi medium sedan? Is there a new Grand Vitara in that face, or perhaps even a new Jimny? Only time will tell...
