The 2014 Skoda Octavia RS arrived in Australia this week, available with petrol and diesel turbo engines, in both ‘lift-back’ sedan and wagon bodies.

In petrol form, the new RS gets the 162kW/350Nm unit straight out of the Volkswagen Golf GTI, while the 2.0 litre diesel makes 135kW and 380Nm.

Pricing starts at $36,490 for the petrol manual sedan, rising to $41,140 for the diesel DSG wagon - plus on-roads.

Australia’s cheapest plug-in hybrid was also launched: the new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Priced from $47,490 plus on-roads, the PHEV undercuts the Holden Volt by around $12,500, while offering an SUV body and all-wheel-drive.

The Outlander can achieve around 52km of electric-only motoring, and takes around five hours to recharge from a 15 amp outlet.
