With the local futures of Ford and Holden on the line, it was fitting that both carmakers made moves to address the issue this week, starting with Ford…

Ford’s Go Further event in Sydney saw the unveiling of its new Ranger-based Everest 4WD wagon. The local carmaker also confirmed the 2014 Falcon update would proceed, despite the 2016 plant shutdowns, and that the Mustang will also hit local showrooms.

“We are committing to Australia being one of our product development centres of excellence,” Ford Global CEO Alan Mulally said during the event. Find out what else he had to say.

The Ford news doesn’t end there, with the blue oval confirming details for its 2014 Mondeo hatch and wagon in Australia. Ford’s new 2014 Transit van is on the way too, available in both “Cargo” and “Custom” variants.

And all of these new models are set to get Ford’s AppLink system, confirmed for Australia in 2014.

Meanwhile in South Australia, workers at Holden’s Elizabeth plant agreed to a wage freeze to help ensure that local production continues.
