Prime Minister Tony Abbott and other senior government ministers will soon be seen in a fleet of high-security BMW 7 Series.

After decades of supporting the locally-built Ford Fairlane, Ford LTD, Holden Statesman and most recently, the Holden Caprice, the Federal Government has begun the switch to an imported model.

Holden has already confirmed the Caprice - or any other long-wheelbase sedan - will not be available once production at the Elizabeth plant ends in 2017, and Ford ceased production of its Fairlane and LTD models years ago.

With that in mind, the Federal Government has wasted no time seeking a replacement and the German-built, grenade-proof, long-wheelbase 760Li High Security has been selected.

Costing over $500,000 each, the limousine carrying the famous ‘C1’ number plate will offer up to ‘VR9’ levels of security.
