Although the debut of its Model X crossover has been delayed until the end of 2014, Tesla CEO and founder Elon Musk has confirmed that the EV automaker is planning to add a third - much more affordable - model to its range in the near future.

After starting out with the ground-breaking Roadster in 2008, Tesla currently only builds one model: the Model S luxury sedan.

The Model X SUV will be the next cab off the rank, and following the X's debut Tesla will shift to developing and building a new, lower-cost platform for its third-generation of cars.

It's this third-gen architecture which will underpin Tesla's affordable small sedan, a car which Musk says will cost roughly US$40,000, be about the same size as a BMW 3-Series and be able to drive for 320km on a single charge.

With fulfilling Model S orders and commencing production of the Model X being the immediate priorities for Tesla, it'll still be some time before we see the brand's as-yet-unnamed small sedan hit the market.

A concept will likely make its motor show debut sometime in early 2015, with the production model set to launch in the USA in either the latter half of 2016 or sometime in 2017.

Once Tesla's new sedan arrives an SUV spin-off will be added to the range, after which a successor to the original Tesla Roadster will surface.
