Tesla’s got a posse down under.
According to an article based on information provided by a growing number of ‘trainspotting’ Tesla fans and owners, the brand is believed to have sold around 200 of its Model S cars in Australia.
Although Tesla has reported more than 10,000 global sales for the first quarter of 2015, it is among the few brands that do not divulge sales numbers for specific regions.
This means that, while Tesla claims its Model S has been “well received” in Australia, it is unclear precisely how well the all-electric premium sedan is performing against rivals like the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes E-Class.
However, technology website EFTM reports that a “passionate community” of Model S owners has been keeping tabs on the flow of Model S cars onto Australian roads.
Snapping photos and taking notes of parked and passing Teslas, the group has pooled its data and concluded that at least 200 Model S sedans have been sold in Australia.
The majority of those spied Model S cars are registered in New South Wales, making up 111 of the 200 cars listed, while Victoria claims 49 Model S owners and Queensland 20.
South Australian and Western Australian fans have identified eight cars in each state, followed by Tasmania (two), the ACT (one) and the Northern Territory (one).
