Tesla’s Model X SUV has been delayed again, with the new on-sale date expected to be sometime in Q3, 2015.

The all-electric SUV was supposed to hit the market last year, before increased demand for the Model S sedan meant production resources were diverted to ensure a healthy supply.

That move shifted the launch date to early next year, and now Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed that a further delay of six months or more is inevitable.

The CEO stressed that Tesla wanted to ensure the Model X wasn’t ‘rushed’ into showrooms to meet a pre-set deadline - preferring instead to delay the launch in an effort to avoid recalls.

“In anticipation of this effort, we now expect Model X deliveries to start in Q3 of 2015, a few months later than previously expected,” Musk said in a letter to shareholders.

“This also is a legitimate criticism of Tesla - we prefer to forgo revenue, rather than bring a product to market that does not delight customers. Doing so negatively affects the short term, but positively affects the long term.”

Musk revealed that sales of the Model S were going from strength to strength, with Tesla’s best-ever quarter in Q3 of this year delivering 7785 sales which included 907 in a single day.

Tesla says its new all-wheel-drive Model S P85D has had an immediate impact, further increasing demand for the Model S.

Little wonder then that Tesla predicts an ambitious 50 percent rise in demand for the Model S throughout 2015.
