Tesla's first all-electric passenger vehicle is less than a year from its global debut, but that's not all Tesla has up its sleeve.

Thanks to the largely universal architecture the Model S sedan is built on, and its work on Toyota's electrified RAV4, Tesla has been developing a 'Model X' SUV right alongside it.

In a brief video interview last year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that a SUV will form part of the company's plans to broaden its appeal and boost its sales. This week, Musk confirmed that a prototype of the Model X will be revealed later this year.

“The plan is to have an unveiling of the Model X prototype in the mid-December time frame,” Musk said in the company's quarterly earnings announcement.

“So far it’s looking good, I don’t think anything will cause an issue.”

Little else is known about the Model X, although Tesla has confirmed that it expects to produce around 15,000 units each year from 2013 - with an ultimate goal of 500,000 vehicles across the range - Model S, Model X and next-gen Roadster.
