Tata will build its own version of the new Land Rover Discovery Sport, according to reports from the carmaker’s home country.

Autocar India says Tata will take the bare bones of the Disco Sport and transform it into a budget-priced SUV wearing the Tata badge.

As Tata owns Jaguar Land Rover, this is entirely feasible, but whether or not the new model would be offered outside of India is unclear at this stage.

This latest report follows a similar report from last year, claiming Tata is keen on further developing its SUV range.

Currently codenamed ‘Q501’, the Tata Disco Sport will reportedly keep none of Land Rover’s styling traits or anything else from the JLR chest in order to keep prices down.

Interior styling and features will be all Tata, and the engine could be a 2.0 litre diesel unit sourced from Fiat rather than any powerplant familiar to Land Rover fans.

Tata and Fiat have a joint engine plant in India that will eventually build the 2.0 litre diesel in question, but Tata may decide to go with one of its existing engine options - again, in the name of keeping prices down.

Expect a suspension tune aimed at appeasing the rough Indian road network, rather than billiard smooth highway cruising in Western Europe.

An arrival date of late 2017 has been suggested for the Indian market, with no other market currently earmarked for a release.

That said, early success in India would no doubt spark interest from other markets. Tata’s distributor in Australia, Fusion Automotive, has previously said it may be interested in passenger cars to complement its Xenon pickup in the future.

As a budget priced SUV in the booming compact or medium SUV segments, the Q501 seems like a logical toe-in-the-water exercise if Fusion decides to take the punt.
