Tata will build its own version of the new Land Rover Discovery Sport, according to reports from the carmaker’s home country.

Autocar India says Tata will take the bare bones of the Disco Sport and transform it into a budget-priced SUV wearing the Tata badge.

As Tata owns Jaguar Land Rover, this is entirely feasible, but whether or not the new model would be offered outside of India is unclear at this stage.

This latest report follows a similar report from last year, claiming Tata is keen on further developing its SUV range.

Currently codenamed ‘Q501’, the Tata Disco Sport will reportedly keep none of Land Rover’s styling traits or anything else from the JLR chest in order to keep prices down.

Interior styling and features will be all Tata, and the engine could be a 2.0 litre diesel unit sourced from Fiat rather than any powerplant familiar to Land Rover fans.
