Victoria’s Transport Accident Commission (TAC) has launched a new website aimed at guiding young drivers into a safer first-car buy.
Called ‘How Safe Is Your First Car’, the website allows users to search for a particular car or browse through a list of P-plater approved vehicles with a 4- or 5-star used car safety rating.
New models are also included, using the Australasian New Car Assessment Program’s (ANCAP) similar star-rating system.
Cars are separated into price brackets based on approximate values on the second-hand or new-car market, including Under $20,000, Under $10,000 and Under $5000.
But unlike the wide-reaching ‘How Safe Is Your Car’ website, the version for young drivers only lists cars with a 4- or 5-star rating.
If a young driver searches for a potential first car on the website and doesn’t find it, chances are it scores less than 4-stars for safety and the TAC would prefer the user considers a different model.
