Suzuki is chanelling the spirit of the Swift GTi with new hot hatch.

The Japanese brand debuted its second-generation Swift Sport at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show, which for the first time is equipped with a turbochaged engine.

Suzuki's bite-sized performance hatch differentiates itself fromt he regular Swift range with revised body work, modified suspension, a sporty cabin makeover and is powered by a version of the 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder from the Vitara small SUV.

While outputs of the small capacity turbo engine are only modest at 103kW and 230Nm, the Swift Sport only weighs 970kg which, Suzuki claims, gives it a power to weight ratio similar to genuine hot hatches.

The engine will be exclusively mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, rather than the CVT automatic offered in lower-grade models.

The Swift Sport's chassis has been heavily modified to match its higher outputs, with the front suspension featuring thicker anti-roll bar joints and stiffer integrated hub and wheel bearings which Suzuki says results in a 15 percent increase in camber stiffness that allows for the use of softer-than-usual springs to maintain a level of compliance while improving road holding. The rear suspension features a thicker torsion beam and revised dampers to give it better high-speed stability.

Beyond that, the new Swift is larger than its predecessor with a 20mm longer wheelbase and a 40mm wider wheel track, which should open up some interior space.

Exterior updates include a new front bumper with wider air intakes and a rear bumper with twin exhaust pipes within a blacked-out diffuser, as well as black A-pillars and larger 17-inch alloy wheels.

A revsied cabin is highlighted by a unique instrument cluster with contrasting coloured dials for the speedo and tacho and additional turbo boost and oil pressure guages, a flat-bottom steering wheel and sports seat with additional side bolstering.

The new Suzuki Swift Sport is expected to arrive in Australian showrooms early in 2018. Full specifications and pricing details will be revealed ahead of its launch.
