Suzuki Australia has this week announced that the Ignis SUV is set to arrive in Australian showrooms from the first quarter of 2017, joining an already burgeoning small SUV line-up that includes the Jimny, S-Cross, and Vitara.
The Ignis will act as something of an SUV counterpart to the Swift, but with slightly smaller dimensions. It rides on a wheelbase that’s 5mm longer, but with an overall length 150mm less, and a width of 35mm less than the Swift, while standing 85mm taller (based on overseas specifications).
An official announcement on Australian pricing and specifications is yet to be made, logically, however, the Ignis will be priced below the Vitara’s $21,990 (plus on roads) starting price.
“Vitara has been an outstanding SUV success for Suzuki, with customers enjoying the performance of the turbo and it’s personalisation options,” Suzuki Australia General Manager, Andrew Moore, said.
“With the new Ignis SUV, we’ll be adding another style icon to the range, with it’s retro looks, bright colours and immense personalisation sure to be popular amongst Australian motorists.”
Overseas the Ignis comes powered a 1.2 litre naturally aspirated engine; Japanese versions also feature a mild hybrid system unlikely to be offered here, a choice of front, or all-wheel-drive is also available.
The Australian engine-line-up is yet to be revealed, though the possibility exists for Suzuki to add the more powerful 1.0 litre three-cylinder Boosterjet turbo engine from the Baleno, with the two cars sharing their chassis architecture.
The Ignis announcement follows Mr Moore’s statements last year concerning Suzuki’s quest to become the number-one small segment passenger and SUV brand in Austraia, and with a four-model small SUV range Suzuki will field the most competitors in the segment.
“I’ve got no doubt that with Vitara and the launch of Ignis, Suzuki will have the best line-up of small SUVs for any customer looking to move across to this fast growing segment of lifestyle enabling vehicles. And SUV’s that stay true to Suzuki’s philosophy of providing great value motoring.” Mr Moore said.
