Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its new S 600 Guard, aimed at customers seeking high levels of luxury combined with super security.

When previewed last week, it was believed the S 600 Guard would offer ‘VR7’ levels of resistance - but Benz has confirmed the new model raises the protective bar to VR9.

That level of protection is available “both in transparent and non-transparent areas”, with the 135kg, 10cm thick windscreen being one of the limo’s party pieces.

The base structure is reinforced with ‘special steel’ and integrated into the body-shell at the production stage, while overlapping internal layers of protection and polycarbonate-coated glass provide maximum splinter protection.

Occupants are protected from a blast of explosives detonated either side of the S-Guard, with underbody armour stretching the full length of the car.

Mercedes-Benz rightly claims the S 600 Guard is “hardly distinguishable” from a regular S 600, with virtually identical exterior styling.

Power comes from the S-Class’s 6.0 litre V12 petrol engine producing 390kW and 830Nm, matched with a 7G-tronic automatic transmission.

Larger brakes all round help haul up the added weight, while Michelin run-flat tyres alloy an escape at speeds of up to 30km/h if the tyres are damaged.

Merc hasn’t revealed the 0-100km/h time, but says the top speed is limited to 210km/h for “weight reasons”. Fuel economy hasn’t been revealed either…

The S-Guard is available as a four-seater, or for the first time buyers can now opt for five seats. The boot still holds 350 litres, if an owner fancies a trip to the supermarket.

The options list, however, is enormous.

A chauffeur package, rear executive seat, rear ‘business console’ available with or without telephone and an ‘air-balance’ package that filters and fragrances the air are just some of the options available.

There’s also a panic alarm, emergency fresh-air system to combat harmful gasses or smoke and a ‘warmth comfort package’ that “warms all surfaces the occupants might come into contact with”.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S 600 Guard is available now - with full manufacturer’s warranty.
