A rendered image of the new Subaru WRX STI in coupe form has emerged, sparking nostalgic thoughts of the STI 22B from the late 1990s.
The rendered image is the work of X-Tomi Automotive Design from Hungary, produced with a nod to the muscular styling of the original 22B while adopting a more coupe-like shape.
The new STI’s rear wing and wheel design have been retained, and Subaru’s iconic blue is the chosen paint finish (or course).
Just 400 STI 22Bs were initially built, selling out in a single weekend on the Japanese market. Further demand saw another 25 units built, with only five of those landing in Australia (the US only got two).
Subaru Australia retained one of the five, with the other four sold to private buyers.
Various items on the original 22B were hand-crafted, including the wheel arches and parts of the interior.
When new, the STI 22B cost around $125,000; or around three times the price of a ‘regular’ WRX STI.
