Reports are circulating in US motoring media that Subaru's Tribeca SUV may be headed for the chopping block. A source close to Subaru has allegedly told US car mag Motor Trend that the Tribeca nameplate won't continue beyond the current model.

The current-generation Tribeca launched in 2008, and is expected to soldier on until 2014.

But with poor US sales and the only powertrain available being a thirsty 3.6 litre flat-six, Subaru is reportedly reluctant to renew the model for another generation.

However, Subaru has told TMR that there are presently no plans to drop the Tribeca from its lineup.

Despite selling around 600 cars this year (making it the second lowest-selling large SUV under $70k, ahead of the Ssangyong Rexton), Subaru Australia says it is content to keep the Tribeca in local showrooms.

"We’re happy with Tribeca’s performance in Australia, consistently averaging 100+ a month," Subaru Australia spokesman David Rowley told TMR.

"As such, we’re delighted to continue offering Tribeca in our line-up for as long as we can."

As for the rumours of the Tribeca's impending demise, Mr Rowley said that nothing had been confirmed.

"Fuji Heavy Industries has not announced any plans or timeline for [the Tribeca's] future," he said.
