Subaru has whipped the covers off its Impreza five-door hatch concept at the Tokyo Motor Show today, flaunting a sharper, crisper design that shines a light on the Japanese automaker's future design direction.

The concept car isn't too far removed from the concept sketch that was released a few weeks ago, though the proportions are naturally less exaggerated.

The flared front and rear wheelarches hint at Subaru's rally-bred heritage, while the car's winged grille is a homage to parent company Fuji Heavy Industries' history as an aircraft manufacturer.

It's a much fresher, more dynamic design than the current model. Has Subaru finally rediscovered its mojo? The appearance of this concept is a promising sign.

Measuring 4400mm long, 1800mm wide and 1440mm tall, the Impreza hatch concept is marginally shorter, substantially wider and a smidge shorter than the current-generation Impreza hatch.

The 19-inch alloys, however, are unlikely to make it down the production line.
