Subaru will reportedly unveil a concept version of its upcoming BRZ rear-wheel-drive coupe at November's Los Angeles Auto Show, ahead of the car's early 2012 production debut.

Although the BRZ has made a number of motorshow appearances in its transparent drivetrain-focused shell, the November show is expected to be the car's first appearance in near-production trim.

According to US magazine Car & Driver, Subaru will follow the BRZ's LA showing with a full production debut alongside Toyota's showroom-ready FT-86 sports car at the Tokyo Motor Show in December.

The report sheds some light on the shared features of both cars, adding that the external styling differences between the FT-86 and the BRZ will be limited to different front-end styling.

The report adds that both companies have an agreement to keep the cars' final styling securely under wraps, explaining the BRZ's simple transparent body and the exaggerated lines of the FT-86 II and Scion FR-S concepts.

An all-wheel-drive variant has again been ruled out with this latest report, although neither company has moved to make an official announcement on that score.

Subaru officials reportedly confirmed at Frankfurt that the BRZ (and presumably the FT-86) has a centre of gravity just 450mm from the ground - putting it in the realm of the Ferrari 458 and the Porsche Cayman

It is expected that both the Subaru and Toyota variants will be built at Subaru's plant in Gunma, Japan.

These latest reports follow details revealed by Subaru in recent months, including the car's measurements: 4200mm overall length, 1770mm width and 1270mm height. Wheelbase is listed at 2570mm.

Power will be provided by Subaru's 2.0 litre naturally-aspirated Boxer engine, although power and performance figures have not been revealed.

It is also expected that the engine will benefit from Yamaha tuning and Toyota's D-4S direct injection technology.

Suspension is handled by MacPherson type struts up front, and a double wishbone arrangement at the rear.

Australia

While Toyota Australia has confirmed a mid-2012 debut for its FT-86 sports car, Subaru's Australian arm has said that it will make an announcement on the BRZ's local prospects later this year.
