The toughened-up concept version of Subaru's upcoming rear-wheel-drive coupe has been given a proper unveiling today, following the release of teaser images earlier this month.

WIth the production BRZ coupe expected to wear the same body as Toyota's FT-86 coupe, this new "BRZ Concept STI" gives the regular model the gift of fatter guards and a big rear wing. The STI-specific aero package also adds a low front spoiler and side skirts.

The exterior STI features are rounded out by the brand's familiar multi-spoke wheels and World Rally Blue paint - this latest version of the colour dubbed WR Blue Pearl II.

Power for the BRZ Concept STI is provided by a 2.0 litre four-cylinder boxer engine, although Subaru hasn't revealed if it's the same unit driving the regular BRZ.

If it is, expect around 147kW and 205Nm of torque - figures recently revealed for Toyota's FT-86, which utilises the same engine.

Subaru says the BRZ's standout features are its Porsche Cayman-rivalling low centre of gravity, with the engine placed 120mm lower and 240mm further back than with other Subaru cars.
