Subaru has begun to tease the next generation XV small SUV ahead of the new model’s Geneva Motor Show unveiling in March.

Just one image previews the new XV at this stage, and as with the outgoing generation the new XV clings tight to the Impreza hatch it is based upon offering up a familiar five-door silhouette.

Official details of the new model are still under wraps but underneath the second generation XV sits the new Subaru Global Platform. This platform currently underpins the Impreza small car and is set to expand across the entire future Subaru range.

Raised ride height, roof rails, unique alloy wheel designs and more rugged matte-plastic body cladding on the bumpers, sills and wheel arches will help set the new XV apart from the more road-focused Impreza, with the full extent of design changes to be more clearly revealed at Geneva.

Interior changes will likely be limited to colour and trim differences, meaning the Impreza’s 6.5-inch or 8.0-inch Apple CarPlay and Android compatible touchscreen infotainment systems are likely.

Beneath the surface the same 2.0-litre horizontally-opposed naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine and all-wheel drive system as the Impreza is expected. The XV is expected to be paired with either Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT automatic or six-speed manual transmissions.

Outputs for the engine are currently rated at 115kW and 196Nm with fuel consumption ranging between 6.6 and 7.2L/100km - no major changes are expected for the XV.

Specfication and pricing for Australian examples will be made available closer to the launch date, which Subaru Australia advise is expected around mid-2017.
