With one eye on Asian markets where large sedans remain popular and another on the sales success of cars like Volkswagen Passat and Ford Mondeo, Citroen is banking on all-new versions of its once hot-selling C5 and C6 models to re-asserts its claims to the mainstream.
The historic French brand says its separation from the up-scale DS range facilitates a more aggressive move into the mainstream, but adds it will always maintain its edgy design focus.
According to European media reports, the Citroen C-xperience measures 4.85-metres in length (about the same as the previous generation C6 which is still sold in China) – virtually identical to the latest Ford Mondeo.
Taking-on Mondeo and Passat won't be easy in Europe, despite stand-apart styling and Citroen's renowned technological bent.
And that plan – plus the focus on China and other Asian markets – plays to Citroen’s Advanced Comfort Program. With a focus on ride comfort, this too revisits one of Citroen’s historic points-of-difference.
As a concept car the C-xperience presents in-your-face style, inside and out, but Citroen will gauge public reaction as pointers to the future C5 and C6.
So we could have the hallmark ‘Be Different, Feel Good’ mantra in the mid-size segment.
Under the bonnet is a petrol-electric hybrid engine (150kW from the internal combustion and engine and 80kW from the electric motor) with a pure EV range of up to 60kms.
