Don’t be distracted by the ‘concept’ tag attached to SsangYong’s ‘LIV-2’ which rolls-out at the Paris Motor Show in a few days – this is very close to the all-new Rexton SUV which launches next year.

While the LIV-2 is certainly a much bolder design than the conservative current Rexton, word leaking out of Korea points to the production Rexton looking even tougher with strong lines and an obvious step up-scale.

‘Strong’ and ‘Modern’ are the design themes for the all-new SsangYong Rexton and, with its upright grille and strong-waist profile, some have suggested a nod to the Volvo XC90.

We understand the sloping rear-roof and squared fenders are also slated for the production Rexton.

Overall, compared to the current Rexton, SsangYong’s all-new model is longer and wider and also 50kgs lighter.

The European media suggest the interior style of the all-new SsangYong Rexton represents an even more marked upscale leap than the exterior with some Mercedes-Benz looks, a large touchscreen and finishes in leather, chrome and woodgrain. The cockpit features a new TFT screen sitting between traditional-looking round gauges.

Rear seat legroom is said to be bountiful and the seven-seat option will continue to provide appeal to family buyers.

In the UK, the current SsangYong Rexton is powered by a 132kW 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine whereas local versions are sold with a 115kW 2.0-litre turbo-diesel. The Brits are expecting the all-new model to carry-over the 2.2-litre engine.

So which diesel engine is slated for Australia is uncertain. There is also a new turbocharegd 2.0-litre GDi petrol engine.

And while the diesel model will continue to employ the Mercedes-Benz seven-speed automatic transmission, the petrol version (to arrive 12 months after the diesel) will see a new eight-speeder also sourced from ‘Benz.

But SsangYong fans will be pleased to learn this shift towards glamour looks doesn’t mean the all-new Rexton will depart from its traditional off-road/towing competence – in fact the new model will sit on an all-new ladder frame chassis which will also feature in the replacement for the Actyon Sport pickup which is due 12 months after the Rexton.

Sources in Korea tell us there is plenty in the new model pipeline for Ssangyong – these two newcomers are just the start as company is on the attack to make-up for lost ground to rivals Hyundai and Kia.
