Is this the replacement for the Ssangyong Rexton? Possibly, and if this design study - dubbed the XLV Concept - makes the transition to production car with its styling mostly intact, we could finally have a Ssangyong with some visual appeal.

The XLV concept (XLV meaning "eXciting smart Lifestyle Vehicle") previews a small to midsize SUV with seven seats, and is also our first taste of Ssangyong's new "Nature Born 3 Motion" design language.

While Ssangyong's ability to craft catchy slogans and acronyms is sketchy, these first images of the XLV Concept show a lot of promise.

And so too does the concept's powertrain. Set up as a mild-hybrid diesel-electric, the XLV Concept pairs an efficient 1.6 litre turbodiesel with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack.

Ssangyong says that despite the XLV's short 4430mm length, its innovative 2+2+2+1 seating configuration allows it to pack seven people into a vehicle that's 2cm longer than a Korando.

However whether it does so comfortably is anyone's guess for now.

Ssangyong is staying mum on more precise technological details, but with the XLV slated to make its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, we won't have to wait long to find out.
