Chrysler has capitalised on the launch of the new 2013 SRT Viper at the New York Motor Show with the unveiling of the GTS-R racing version, developed to compete in the American Le Mans Series.

Making its racing debut this year, the racing Viper will tackle the likes of the Ferrari 458 GT, BMW M3 GT and Porsche 911 GT3 RSR in the ALMS GT class.

Vipers have enjoyed great success in the ALMS series in the past. Unfortunately, factory support dried up in the wake of 2009's Chrysler Group ownership changes and the retirement of the previous-generation snake.

The factory is back on-board however, and, for 2012, SRT is establishing a new two-car team with drivers Dominik Farnbacher, Marc Goossens, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Kuno Wittmer.

The development of the GTS-R was shared between Chrysler’s in-house SRT arm and renowned racecar engineering firm, Riley Technologies.

“Racing has been a significant part of the illustrious history of Viper not only with significant wins on the track, but also in the continued development of the street cars. Our new 2013 SRT Viper models are proof of those lessons learned,” SRT boss Ralph Gilles said.

The previous two generations of Viper have been a common sight in Australian production racing, which continues with Greg Crick’s Viper Competition Coupe II entry in the current Australian GT Championship.

SRT has yet to confirm which of the remaining nine 2012 ALMS rounds will form the GTS-R’s debut.
