South Korea is ramping up its commitment to self-driving cars with a new dedicated facility set to be opened later this year.

Called K-City, the facility will operate in a similar fashion to some existing test circuits - such as University Of Michigan’s Sim City - allowing car makers to test autonomous software in a safe environment.

Roundabouts, divided roads, car parks and more are some of the obstacles that autonomous cars will face while testing at K-City, along with bus-only lanes and road signs.

Business Korea reports an opening date scheduled for October, and that the facility will cover some 360,000 square metres.

Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure And Transport is tipping in 11 billion won (AU$13 million), with the facility to be opened in two stages.

The Ministry will allow testing at K-City with or without the permit required for testing on public roads, and Kia, Hyundai, Samsung and SK Telecom are among those likely to test there.

Samsung recently announced its intentions to develop self-driven technology in its home market, and Hyundai is developing an autonomous version of its Ioniq hybrid among others.
