As we write this, Sony is in the middle of showing off its all-new PlayStation 4 gaming console at an invite-only event in the US.

Racing games are a cornerstone of any gaming system's success, with PlayStation sales driven largely by the Gran Turismo franchise, and Microsoft's XBOX leaning on the Forza Motorsport series.

Now, a new "collaborative" racing game, DriveClub, will allow PlayStation 4 gamers to team up with friends around the globe and race across the world's most recognisable landscapes.

"Driveclub isn't just about cars or locations, but about people. Collaborative racing with friends, on teams," the company says.

Inspired perhaps by the iconic Need For Speed games, DriveClub will allow players to take the online battle style one step further, forming clubs and taking on other groups.

In simpler terms, it's gang warfare for online racing.

Mobile apps for the game will also be available, and while racing on your iPhone or Sony XPeria won't be possible, the app will allow you to pick cars and tracks for future battles, schedule challenges and tweak your garage.
