Skoda has confirmed that last year's MissionL concept will enter production as the Rapid, putting an end to speculation that it would wear a 'Lauretta' badge.

While Skoda already offers a model in the Indian market with the Rapid name, the new global model is a size larger than its Polo-based counterpart.

This new Skoda is more easily connected to the Rapid coupe of the 80s, with both cars featuring a small footprint and a liftback design.

Underpinned by Volkswagen's new MQB platform, the new Rapid will enter the Skoda line-up between the light Fabia and the midsized Octavia.

"As part of its growth strategy, Skoda has initiated the largest model offensive in its corporate history and will bring a new vehicle to market every six months on average in the years ahead,” Skoda boss Winfried Vahland said.

“The Rapid is our next new model. It has a central importance for our growth and will provide us with a strong tailwind on international markets,” he added.

Its European debut later this year will expand the Skoda line-up to seven models, and a five-door version - previewed by the earlier VisionD concept - could follow.

Technical details for the MissionL concept have not been revealed, although it is likely that the Rapid production car will share its powertrains and platforms with the Volkswagen Jetta.

The Rapid is expected to make its Australian debut in mid to late 2013.
