Reports circulating in the European media have Skoda giving the ‘thumbs-up’ to production of a Fabia SUV.

And one source has the newcomer launching in 2018.

But it’s not the mooted Volkswagen Tiguan-based vehicle.

The Czech-Republic offshoot of the Volkswagen Group will follow other Group brands into the compact SUV market segment – the Seat Arona will debut late next year and will be followed by Volkswagen’s T-Roc – the latter based on the Polo architecture.

But Skoda is looking to beat its Volkswagen Group rivals in two key areas – interior space and practicality. This thanks to key dimensions – length, width and height – which are bigger in the new SUV than the Fabia.

According to the reports, Skoda will achieve this goal either using Volkswagen’s mid-size MQB platform or could further develop the current Fabia architecture.

And to complete the re-alignment of the Skoda crossovers, look for the all-new Yeti to grown in size – in fact this will probably be the Tiguan-based vehicle.
