Skoda has given its Fabia light car range a light going-over for the 2017 model year, with the revised model scoring a new 1.0 litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.

The engine is the same TSI unit used by others in the Volkswagen Group family, and is also destined to power the updated Rapid which was revealed last month.

The powerplant will replace the current 1.2 litre four-cylinder engine but continues to provide customers with a choice of two power outputs - 70kW/160Nm or 81kW/200Nm - driving the front wheels.

Power has risen 4kW for the lower-spec engine compared to the outgoing 1.2 litre unit but torque remains unchanged, while the situation is reversed with the upper-spec engine which instead gets a boost in torque - up 25Nm.
