As the Volkswagen Group’s Wörthersee Treffen draws closer, the first of what may be several workshop concepts destined to appear at the event has emerged.

Meet the Skoda FUNstar, a miniature ute concept based on the Fabia fastback.

As with last year’s Citijet design project, the Czech carmaker has again let a group of 17-18 year-old apprentices run wild with its 2015 effort.

The group of 23 students from the Skoda Academy decided to take the Fabia and remove the rear section, resulting in a two-door coupe-ute.

Initially, a total of 84 possibilities were submitted from which the concept was chosen, and a group of primary school children determined the name.

The FUNstar wears a silver paint finish and lime green highlights, while the same colour scheme features on the 18-inch alloy wheels - as seen on the Octavia RS (in different colours).

The tray is lined with chequer plate-style stainless steel, and the headlights feature green daytime running lights.

Power comes from a 1.2 litre TSI petrol engine producing 90kW, matched with a seven-speed DSG automatic. The students’ first choice was the 1.8 litre TSI engine, but it was deemed too large for the project.

Inside, there’s a white and lime green colour scheme to complement the exterior, along with a head-up display, sports steering wheel and an infotainment touchscreen.

Perhaps the influence of a group of 17-18 year olds is evident in the sound system, which boasts a 1400W output and a 200W subwoofer.

Skoda said its Citijet concept from last year was a big success, and if a similar positive reaction follows the FUNstar then the same apprentice project for Wörthersee Treffen will be run again next year.

Not to be outdone by its Volkswagen stablemate, Seat also arrived at last year’s Wörthersee Treffen event with a concept of its own - the Cupstar.

Unsurprisingly, the FUNstar is not destined to be followed by a production version, although fans of the Suzuki Mighty Boy and of other similar ute-type-fun-things in Australia may well have put down a deposit…

The FUNstar is also a nod to the Skoda Felicia, of which a two-door coupe pickup version was offered in the 1990s.
