Skoda has unveiled its Citijet design project ahead of the Wörthersee Treffen enthusiast event in Austria, debuting as the second roofless Volkswagen Group car at the show.

Seat’s Ibiza Cupster concept will also be in Wörthersee flying the Volkswagen Group flag, with a key feature of both the Citijet and the Cupster being their open-topped designs.

Based on Skoda’s Citigo sub-light car, the Citijet is the work of 16 school apprentices, who designed and built the car over six months with some help from Skoda Design.

The students were told to “let their creativity run free”, with the end result described simply as a two-seater sports convertible.

Power comes from a 1.0 litre petrol engine producing 55kW, complimented by the Citijet’s “powerful” exhaust with two tailpipes.

Exterior features include a metallic blue and white paint finish, blue 16-inch alloy wheels and a handmade rear spoiler.

The Citijet’s interior is based on the Citigo Sport model, including a leather-lined steering wheel with red stitching, a red and white painted dash and a 300 watt audio system with music-reactive LED lighting.

“Our apprentices have put their hearts and souls into this vehicle,” Head of Skoda Design, Jozef Kaba, said.

“Every little detail, no matter how small, was discussed, agreed upon and put into practice by the team. It was a real team effort. The outcome is a unique and emotional car, of which everybody involved should be very proud.”

Speaking at the recent Skoda Yeti and Rapid Spaceback launches, Skoda Australia boss Michael Irmer said the Citigo sub-light car was not under consideration for the Australian market at present.

The Seat Ibiza Cupster and Skoda Citijet will be joined by the Audi A3 Clubsport Quattro sedan at the Wörthersee Treffen event, which kicks off May 28.
