Classic Mini fans dismayed at the continual growth and weight-gain of the BMW-owned Mini brand take note: The original Mini is back, like you’ve never seen it before thanks to the preservation efforts of boutique GT builder, David Brown Automotive.

Officially labelled Mini Remastered, David Brown Automotive’s take on the classic Mini sees an all-new body coachbuilt using traditional techniques, but updated to a more modern finish thanks to “de-seaming” the exterior and welding in bespoke structural enhancements.

In a tip of the hat to David Brown Automotive’s Speedback GT, the Mini Remastered features a custom billet aluminium grille, enamalled David Brown Automotive badges and LED rear light clusters that mimic the look of the the larger model.

Other bespoke and thoroughly modern touches include custom touches include puddle lamps concealed in the Mini Remastered’s bullet-shaped mirror housings, Keyless Go proximity key with push-button start, and inbuilt navigation with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

David Brown Automotive has stayed true to the Mini’s origins with a rebuilt version of the original 1.3-litre BMC four-cylinder engine - the largest offered over the original Mini’s production run - and promises up to 50 percent more power than the original.

A reconditioned four-speed manual gearbox and “upgraded” suspension and brakes keep the spirit of the original alive, with a focus on making the original components reliable but still thrilling to drive.

The artistry of the bespoke build progress is most evident in the Mini Remastered’s finishes, with the availability of three models - a standard version and a pair of limited edition Inspired By Cafe Racers and Inspired By Monte Carlo models.

A range of two tone paint finishes (with contrasting paint applied to the roof and fuel tank) is available, or David Brown Automotive will allow customers to mix their own unique paint hue. A fully bespoke interior in a range of british leathers or fabric trims, a leather trimmed luggage compartment, retro Smiths gauges, and a Moto-Lita steering wheel round out the upgrades.

“The car has been subtly transformed and updated to retain the original’s DNA, yet includes key design details from Speedback GT as you can see by the grille, taillights and interior styling, as well as providing modern comfort and luxury,“ company founder David Brown said.

Pricing has yet to be announced, but the company promises the Mini Remastered will be “highly-exclusive” indicating that a fully kitted vehicle will be for the most devoted (and cashed-up) Mini fans - in a similar vein to what Singer Vehicle Design does in the world of classic Porche 911s.

The Mini Remastered range will make its public debut at Top Marques Monaco, in Monte Carlo in late April.
