The Spanish arm of the Volkswagen group, Seat, has unveiled its first ever SUV prior to its official Geneva Motor Show debut just hours after the first images leaked online.

Unfortunately for Aussie SUV buyers, the Seat Ateca is out of the question; VW’s hands are already full here with both the Volkswagen and Skoda brands.

Based on the same MQB modular platform as the Volkswagen Golf, and new Tiguan, the Ateca’s 4.36 metre length makes it a little more compact than the 4.48 metre Tiguan.

Under the bonnet, a range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines spans from 85kW to 140kW starting with a 1.0 litre petrol and finishing with a 2.0 litre diesel. Both front and all-wheel-drive options are available.

The Ateca’s technology includes Traffic Jam Assist, a system that allows the Ateca to steer, accelerate, and brake itself within set parameters at “traffic jam speeds” of up to 60km/h.

The Ateca also offers Emergency Assist, able to detect an unresponsive driver the system will first alert the driver by an audible warning, followed by a tap of the brakes. If no action is taken by the driver the car will slow itself to a standstill while maintaining its lane position.

Connectivity comes via Seat’s Easy Connect infotainment systems that bundle MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto together, displayed on an 8.0-inch touchscreen display, and backed up with wireless charging.

It's set to make its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
