The Los Angeles Auto Show opens in two weeks, and with it will come another round of the event's popular Design Challenge.

Announced in September, this year's theme is the next generation of police patrol cars. A number of carmakers have answered the call, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, GM, Honda and Subaru.

BMW's entry is the ultra-sleek 2025 Human-Drone Pursuit Vehicle, offering space for two officers and the ability to deploy driving or flying drones to deal with the nonstop gridlock of future highways.

General Motors' solution involves three separate vehicles, covering the essential tactics: Observe, Pursue and Engage. Dubbed 'Volt Squad' (of course), GM's vehicles are driven by a future evolution of its Voltec electric technology.

Honda has also adopted the trick of deployable drones, taking the form of unmanned motorcycles that can weave through California's future traffic stoppages.

The R&D arm of Honda's Japanese headquarters has also taken a turn at the challenge, revealing its CHiPS 2025 Traffic Crawler, designed to adapt quickly to changing road and traffic conditions.

Mercedes-Benz has taken a more rugged approach, offering up a G-Class inspired Ener-G-Force patroller designed to act independently of what the carmaker suspects will be an almost entirely autonomous traffic system.
