Surgeons attending to the critically injured Michael Schumacher have reported a “slight improvement” in the former F1 world champion’s condition after a second operation to relieve pressure on his injured brain.
Head anaesthetician at Grenoble University Hospital, Jean-Francois Payen, told a news conference, “The situation is more under control than yesterday but we cannot say he is out of danger."
"We have won some time but we must continue an hour-by-hour surveillance,” he said.
A second procedure was performed, with the permission of the Schumacher family, after new scans showed enough improvement to allow surgeons to again operate.
Post-operative scans after the two-hour procedure indicated further “slight improvement” in his condition, according to Reuters.
Doctors however warn that Schumacher, one of the greatest racing drivers of all time, remains in a medically-induced coma and is still fighting for his life.
His former teammate at Ferrari, Felipe Massa, who himself suffered life-threatening head injuries when struck by a metal spring fragment at the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix, said on Instagram: "I am praying for you my brother! I hope you have a quick recovery! God bless you, Michael."
We too hope that the New Year brings the best news.
