Saab has 'unveiled' its aborted 9-6 SUV, based on the current Subaru Tribeca. Developed while Saab was part of the GM empire, the 9-6 was intended to follow the Impreza-based 9-2X to market.

Too soon for much to come out of that union however, GM sold half of its Subaru share to Toyota and the big Saab SUV was put in storage. (Interestingly, it's now reported that Subaru's new Tribeca could share a platform with Toyota's next Kluger).

Now divorced from its former American master and partnered with Chinese and Russian investors, Saab is working to bring an all-new 9-6X SUV to the stage.

The 9-6 prototype shown here is not that car, but thanks to a recent poll on the Saab website, the Swedish carmaker has at last revealed its last attempt at an SUV.

The new 9-6X, still on track, is likely to share a lot in common with the new 9-4X, due in Australia later this year.

According to Steve Wade, former 'Save Saab' campaigner and now a part of the company's social media team, a three-door version of the 9-6 is squirreled away at the Saab museum.

That one, perhaps too frightening for the light of day, has yet to be revealed.
