Cash-strapped Saab has hit a new bump in its journey to recommence production, with the Swedish carmaker's parent NEVS forced to immediately lay off up to 200 employees.

In a statement issued this week, NEVS said the move was necessary as “the decision to re-start production will be further delayed”.

The statement emphasised that Saab had retained its permanent workforce until now, despite production of the reborn Saab 9-3 having halted back in May, due to ‘short-term cash-flow problems’.

The carmaker hoped a quick resolution could see production restart with minimal delay, and by retaining all employees it would have a workforce ready to go.

Saab still has another 350 employees however, so production can recommence within a reasonable timeframe assuming NEVS can fulfil its goal of finding new investors.
