Reports that Rolls-Royce would introduce an electric vehicle in the near future have been written off by CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös, but we may yet see a plug-in hybrid.

In 2009, reports suggested that the British limo-maker had tested a number of its models with electric powertrains, inviting a small number of high-profile clients to offer feedback on the potential for a production EV.

Speaking with Car & Driver this week, Müller-Ötvös said that the response "was ambivalent," with participants approving of the torque-laden system and ultra-quiet drive, but unhappy with the thought of lengthy recharge times and limited driving range.

He added that a plug-in hybrid could eventually feature in the Rolls range however, with the balance of electric-only and petrol modes offering "the advantages of both [EV and traditional internal combustion engine] worlds".

Before Rolls-Royce hitches its wagon to the alternative energy movement, we're more likely to see new models in the new Ghost line-up, including coupe and drophead convertible styles.

Although he did not offer details on whether we would see a coupe or a drophead-like convertible Ghost, Müller-Ötvös said he sees "a lot of potential in the market" for a more enthusiast- or recreation-focused Ghost.

He ruled out following Bentley into the SUV market however, saying that he would have "a difficult time imagining an SUV for our brand".
